Team Letter – September 2024

It’s good to be back in the rhythm of church and parish life, but it feels unbelievable that we’re already at the end of September…..no-one mention the ‘C’ word, please!

We’ve had a good summer, though, and things have certainly been ticking over nicely. We continued to serve our children and young people, and one of our biggest successes was the Holiday Club at Christ Church with St Philip (see picture above).

This club has been running for 35 years, with a dedicated couple at the helm: but this was the first year when they were not able to be here, and so Hannah stepped up to the plate! It went well and we had 45 children attending each day (with 10 teenagers as junior helpers) and everyone seemed to enjoy it. We explored the story of Paul and remembered that, just as God spoke to Paul and gave him courage and strength to spread the light and love of God around the world, so God can also speak to us and give us the same things too.

We also offered an interactive trail for families around the St Dunstan’s Churchyard and Messy Church Goes Wild was well attended in August – we made bee baths!

We’re really excited to share details of a couple of new ventures. This month, we started a series on ‘Exploring Prayer’ in St Dunstan’s Hall on Sunday afternoons. We’ve had a great time thinking about and experiencing different kinds of prayer. To quote someone who came: ‘A relaxed atmosphere which encouraged everyone to get involved.  Come and join in!’ We’re also pleased to be offering some singing workshops for Key Stage 2 children starting in September, based at St Dunstan’s. Through these workshops, we’ll be working towards participation in the service on Advent Sunday.

But we must not forget our ministry to the bereaved. For the first time, we are offering a service for Baby Loss Awareness Week. On Saturday 12th October at 4pm, we will be holding a Baby & Child Loss Remembrance Service for those who have experienced such devastating losses at any stage. Families and children are welcome, and refreshments will be provided. And, in addition to our annual All Souls Service, on Sunday 3rd November at 5pm, we are welcoming in the light, with a party just for children, on Saturday 26th October at 4pm. Children must bring an adult!

Last, but by no means least, we are sad to say that after just over 3 years as our curate, Francesca Perlman-Mitchell, will be leaving Cheam Parish in October. She will be covering a vacancy in the Parish of Kingswood, before moving elsewhere on a permanent basis. Her last service in the parish will be at St Dunstan’s on Sunday 13th October. We all wish Francesca well in her new role – she will be much missed by the whole team!

With every blessing,

The Clergy Team
