Cheam and Sutton Rotary are delighted to announce that they have donated a defibrillator to St. Dunstan’s Church in Cheam for use by Church members and the various groups that use the Church Hall.
Sally Gilliver from Rotary, together with SCILL, and members of the church, helped set up the The St. Dunstan’s Monday Morning Friendly Group some 8 years ago to provide a meeting place for seniors and combine chair based exercises with refreshments followed by a quiz which has now become so popular we have a waiting list of people who want to join. It has always been run as an event to have fun and prevent loneliness. A year ago one of the members became unwell which gave us the idea to fund and donate a defibrillator. Brendan McWilliams who is a Rotary member and a trained First Aider, recently carried out the (highly entertaining) training not only for the Monday group but also members of the church.
Past President, Suzan Walsh, officially handed the defibrillat
or to Nick Peacock, Rector of St. Dunstan’s, who placed it in its housing in the Church Hall. This equipment will be accessible to all whenever the Church and/or Hall are open.
Nick, who participated in the training, said, 'we at St Dunstan’s are delighted the Rotary has been able to donate a defibrillator to our church. Our hall and church are used for many community activities and the defibrillator means that we can provide extra safety for those who attend. Many thanks!'
We all now know what to do in the event of a medical emergency but sincerely hope that we never have to put our training into use!
